With music’s often perceived reliance on alcohol (both for performance and paycheques), Chickstock - an all ages, nonprofit event run for local high school acts - proved refreshingly naïve.
Organised by the dedicated Jessica Young, under the guise of the Chicks Project, with ten local high school acts in combination with three more seasoned performers, the free event was a joy to attend. With the high school acts’ eager to perform, and an even more receptive audience (after a little encouragement), their enthusiasm for live music in any and all forms was not lost on some older heads in attendance. With noisy heavily Nirvana-influenced The Suds showing particular promise, the future of Dunedin music looks to be in passionate hands if Chickstock is any indication.
